How to use the Tibetan Singing Bowl

1. Preparing the Space - Find a quiet, peaceful space where you won’t be disturbed. You may want to dim the lights, light candles, or use incense to enhance the mood. Sit or lie down in a comfortable position.

2. Holding the Bowl - Hold the bowl in your non-dominant hand. Ensure that it’s not touching your body or any other surface, as this can mute the sound. If you are sitting on the floor, you can place the bowl on a cushion or flat surface for stability, or hold it slightly above your palm.

4. Playing the Bowl -  There are two main ways to play a Tibetan singing bowl:

  • Striking the Bowl (Chime Sound) - Use the wooden mallet to strike the bowl. Gently tap the edge of the bowl with the mallet to produce a clear, bell-like sound. You can tap once or several times depending on your desired effect. Allow the sound to resonate and fade naturally. Focus on the sound and let it fill your space.

  •  Rimming the Bowl (Continuous Sound) - Place the mallet around the rim of the bowl. Apply light pressure and gently and at a moderate pace, circle the mallet around the outside rim of the bowl, which creates a continuous, humming tone that grows in intensity.
  •

5. Focus & Meditation

  • Listening to the Sound: Once you start creating sound, close your eyes and focus on the vibration. Notice how the sound affects your body and mind.
  • Breathe Mindfully: Take slow, deep breaths in sync with the sound of the bowl. Inhale deeply, exhale slowly, and let the vibrations guide your breath.

6. Ending the Session - Let the bowl's sound fade naturally and take a moment of silence before moving on. After playing, it’s often helpful to ground yourself by pressing your palms together, sitting quietly for a few moments, or engaging in a grounding practice like walking barefoot or deep breathing.
